Sirogojno sweaters are a recognisable Serbian hand-knitted garment that has been produced for more than four decades by the knitters cooperative in the village of Sirogojno on Zlatibor mountain. The cooperative was founded in 1962 with the aim of preserving traditional knitting skills and providing income for rural families.
The sweater is knitted by hand from one hundred percent pure wool obtained from sheep grazed on the pastures of Zlatibor and the surrounding area. The wool is spun by traditional methods and is undyed — only the natural shades of wool are used (white, cream, grey, brown, black), so every sweater has a unique combination of tones.
The motifs combined on the sweater belong to the repertoire of traditional Sirogojno symbols: crosses, rhomboids, fir tree, mountain motifs and geometric compositions characteristic of the western Serbia region. Each knitter leaves her own personal signature in the combination.
The sweater is extra warm and ideal for winter days; it naturally repels water thanks to the lanolin in the wool, and durable enough to be passed down within a family. The Sirogojno brand became internationally recognised during the 1980s when models were exhibited in Paris and Milan. Sizes S, M, L, XL. Hand-wash in cold water with a neutral soap.
