Opanci are the traditional footwear of the Balkan peoples, and in Serbia they have been part of national identity for over five centuries. The oldest archaeological traces of opanci have been found in 13th-century medieval graves, but this type of footwear probably has even older roots in Roman caligae sandals.
Opanci ravni are the simplest variant — without an upturned beak at the toe — and are most often worn with festive folk costumes from across Serbia. Etno radionica crafts them by hand from a single piece of quality cowhide, which is soaked in water for several hours before forming so that it becomes pliable. The sole is also of layered leather, about 6 millimetres thick, with a reinforced heel.
The upper of the opanak is hand-laced with leather strips (kaiscici) that can be tied around the leg, forming the characteristic mesh on top of the foot. Sizes 38 to 47, single colour of natural untreated leather that develops a beautiful patina with age. Ideal for folk dancing, costume photography and as an ethno souvenir. Store in a dry place; occasionally treat with a neutral leather balm.
